Beautiful antique linen embroidered tea dress

Beautiful antique linen embroidered tea dress
We can only imagine a time when clothes such as this were worn when ladies went out amongst friends. Circa 1910 - 20, this “tea dress” was worn to call on folks for socializing (a party dress would have had a much wider skirt for dancing). It is made of a linen batiste with a gorgeous machine embroidered pattern of florals and swirls. It closes up the front with an offset ruffled lace edge which graduates upwards from waist to shoulder and then around the neck to make up the collar. Another sailor-type “under collar” was added which hangs down the back. The under collar and sleeves are finished with a simple tatted lace. I took plenty of pictures so you could see the fabulous detailing and care that went into making this amazing tribute of yesteryear so be sure and scroll down to see them all.

It has been carefully hand cleaned to remove all yellowing and stains. There were 2 small areas of damage which have been repaired and are well under the collar so they will never be seen. There are a scant handful (I think three) of very tiny holes which are virtually lost in the folds and hurt nothing so I left them be. There are a few hooks and eyes missing which you will have to replace and it would be a good idea to reinforce the ones which are there as well. The seams are sturdy and the fabric is sound. The dress has been steamed but not ironed. As you can see, it displays beautifully just as it is. If you wish to press it and maybe add a bit of light starch, it would accentuate the lovely detailing even more.

The measurements are as follows:

Waist: 26”
Bust: 36” (filmed on a 34” bust)
Shoulder to shoulder: 16”
Neck to hem: 51”
Waist to hem: 34”
Skirt circumference: 74”

Given the condition, you could actually wear this heavenly creation ~ can’t you just see it worn by a bride at a garden wedding? The elderly woman would absolutely swoon. If you’re already happily married, it would make a grand parlor display piece as well.

I thank you for looking and, as always, if you have any questions or need additional pictures, just ask! I’ll be more than happy to oblige.
