Pair of Assisi Work Towels with Tags - Rare!

These towels were hand embroidered in a technique called Assisi work, named as it originated in Assisi, Italy, the home of St. Francis of Assisi.  Because he was the patron saint of animals, most patterns depict animals although some of the modern patterns, though using the same technique, do not.  Made of ecru linen, they measure 22 x 15.5 and came to me unused with the labels still attached.  Although I occasionally run across this type of work, it is rare and generally not in good condition so to find these literally made my heart go pitter-pat.  They cleaned up beautifully and are ready for display.  Sold as a pair.

Hand washed, air dried and pressed.  Excellent condition.   c. 1940-60s
