This is one of two aprons I purchased from the estate of a lady who was a war bride. I learned via her daughter that her English mother met her American father when he was a soldier in England during WWII. Her mom brought many of the family’s old linens with her when she came to the United States and her grandmother continued to send her more over the years. When her grandmother died all the remaining heirloom linens were shipped to the United States as well.
The apron is made from a whisper thin linen fabric and was hand embroidered. If it has seen any use it was minimal and the colors in the embroidery are as bright as the day it was made and it shows absolutely no wear. It measures 19” long and 18” at its widest point (including the 1” Valenciennes lace). I love the spring pastel colors in this one as well as how the lace on the pockets was made to gently roll down. I am unsure of the age but I know it’s old as the original silk ribbon literally disintegrated in my hands. Because I happen to be fresh out of pure silk ribbon it was replaced with satin. My camera went a little wonky on the side view but the ribbon matches the purple in the embroidered flowers perfectly.
Carefully hand cleaned, air dried and pressed with light starch. Excellent condition.
