Beautiful Completely Hand Sewn and Embroidered Baby Dress and Slip - 1953

This precious little dress is completely hand sewn – from the beautiful embroidery to the tiny French seams up the sides!  Made from almost sheer cotton, it is highly detailed with oodles of tiny pin tucks, embroidery and tiny drawnwork.  The bottom hem is finished with a charming dainty scallop.  Amazingly, the matching slip was still with it.  The lady who sold it to me said it was worn by her daughter who is now 59 years old, dating this dress to 1953.  That was a time when the technique of perfect hand embroidery was all but dying, but women still wanted to dress their children in the finery they had grown up with.  The industrious women of the Philippines, who knew a gold mine when they saw it, stepped up to the plate and produced beautiful dresses such as these at a modest price.  The tag states it is for a child of 6 months.  It is free of stains and in perfect condition.  The matching slip is included.  Would be perfect for christenings or any “Sunday-go-ta-meetins” where only the finest attire will do.

Hand cleaned, air dried and pressed.  Excellent condition    c. 1953
