A wonderful example of “hairpin” lace – named for a small hairpin shaped tool used to make it. Although hand crocheted, the technique is different as the hairpin tool allowed them to make equal gaps of running thread between the crochet. Equally charming are the detailed leaves centered in each teardrop of this 4” lace. The basting stitches still present around the edge indicate this was probably put away and never used. This has such a nostalgic feel and is in a pattern I’ve not seen before. Bright white and without flaw. It has every bit the grandeur and stateliness as any similar counterparts I've seen of this era.
Hand laundered and pressed. Excellent condition. c. 1900-30’s
