Antique Handmade American Renaissance Battenburg Needlelace – Oh, Mercy!!

Antique Handmade American Renaissance Battenburg Needlelace – Oh, Mercy!!

Oh, where to even begin!  This 23.5” centerpiece is Handmade American Renaissance Battenburg Needlelace which was inspired by similar Belgian laces.  The ribbon portions are just that – commercial yardages cut and basted to a pattern to form the outlines.  There are at least 5 different types used here.  The fillings are wonderful hand stitches all in the Battenburg genre. Standard Battenburg is far simpler, with only one very plain ribbon and simplest of stitches to hold the ribbons together. When you inspect it closely, it is almost like a sampler as she rarely used the same technique twice.  This is a very nice one with good design and execution.  Whereas most laces of this type are large, this is scaled down and much more delicate.  Even sweeter is the condition, which is nearly perfect!  I don’t believe I’ve ever found one in such nice condition!   Strong enough to use.  Excellent for framing!

Hand laundered, air dried and pressed. Excellent condition   c. 1900 – 20
