This antique doilie hails from Ireland and is done in a technique called Irish Crochet. Irish crochet has a rich and interesting history and saved thousands of Irish families from the Irish potato famine. For a great article on its history and how it was produced Click Here. Lace of this type was generally found on lace and clothing. This is the first time Ive seen it made into doilie (and Ive looked at tens of thousands). All of the traditional Irish favorites are represented; the Irish Rose, clovers and the Irish thistle. Made from a tiny linen thread, it measures 9 across. It would have taken about 25 hours of solid crocheting to make. It has a tiny bit of wear on the edge but it is so slight that its virtually unnoticeable. A great piece for the collector!
Hand laundered, air dried and pressed. Excellent condition c. 1880 1930s
