An adorable baby dress which came from a sweet couple in their mid-70’s who were trying to downsize and, despite their best efforts, couldn’t interest their children in any of it. Lucky us! The “Mister” said this was worn by his grandmother who was born in 1899. All the lace on this dress is hand embroidered (probably from England) in the Ayrshire style. It is used around the hem (almost 6 feet worth, if you can believe it!) and a smaller version around the neck and sleeves. The yoke comes to a point at the center front and the loooonnng skirt attaches to it and is highly gathered. So much detail was put into this sweetheart of a dress (much MUCH more than most) with even the 3 tiny buttons covered with lace. The photographs don’t even begin to do it justice. There are a few repairs which are VERY well done, and a small lace added around the neckline to hide a repair made at the seam. Bright white with no stains or yellowing. The measurements are as follows:
Shoulder to shoulder: 10” Under arm to Under arm: 11.5” Neck: 12” around Sleeves: 6” Length: 35” Skirt Circumference: 71”
I don’t see a reason in the world why this couldn’t be worn by some special little princess on her baptismal day… followed by a trip to the photographer, of course. Who wouldn’t want to capture her in this gorgeous get up?!? To see the other dress worn by this same little girl click here
Hand cleaned, air dried and pressed. Made and worn in 1899. Excellent condition as described.
