Set of Eight Monogrammed “HM” Linen Damask Napkins - Carnations

These beautiful napkins are of very high quality linen damask and woven in an Edwardian pattern of arabesque swirls and carnations. Each has a perfect “HM” monogrammed in one corner. They measure a nice 26” x 25.5”. These came from a soft spoken lady moving into an assisted living facility and wanted me to find good homes for her linens. She had a fascinating tale of where they came from. Her parents were Jewish and came from Germany in the late 30’s. Her father was a chemist and her mother (Hannah) was a professor. With the rise of the 3rd Reich, both of her parents lost their jobs and most of their money was confiscated so they moved in with Hannah’s parents. With no way to find employment, they decided to immigrate to the United States. Hannah begged her parents to come with them but they refused although her mother gave her all of her linens to take with them with the thought they could sell them and have enough money to make a fresh start. Hannah and her husband made it to the United States and did very well (even without selling the linens) and both his and her entire families died in concentration camps. Hannah, where ever you are, your mother’s linens live on and they will be treasured. I promise.

Hand washed, air dried and pressed.   Excellent condition. c. pre 1940
