Set of Six Fabulous Mountmellick Embroidered Dessert Roundels

This set of dessert rounds hails from Mountmellick, Ireland where fabulous linens such as these were made by women and girls to help them earn income during the austere living conditions of the Industrial age followed by the Irish potato famine. Most pieces we find today were bought by tourists who brought them back to America with them. They were always made on heavy cotton fabric and only certain highly textured stitches were used. I could go on and on about this fascinating type of work… but I won’t. However, I urge you to look closely at the pictures and poke around on the internet for articles and more pictures. It will be worth your time. This pretty set consists of 6 pieces. Each piece measures 11” x 11”. The slight silvering tells us this set has some age to it, and the one small broken thread is nothing more than where a tiny slub fell off – a natural part of the fabric aging. Mountmellick is known for its durability so it is of no surprise that all pieces are extremely sound and could actually be used to impress even the most notable of guests.  Sold as a set.

Hand washed, air dried and pressed.   Excellent condition. c. 1880 -1920
