Linen Embroidered Centerpiece from Madeira

Centerpieces similar to these were made on the island of Madeira and shipped to the United States by the thousands. Housewives snatched them up to protect their furniture and add a touch of elegance to the room. This one is hand embroidery on linen and measures 23.5” square. Although it feels like new, it has a slight bit of damage near one of the scallops. It held up perfectly through the washing process and I foresee no future problems whatsoever. It is otherwise perfect in every way.

Hand washed, air dried and pressed.   Excellent condition. c. 1910-40
