Pair of Madeira Risqué Appliqued Towels – Highly Collectable

These never fail to make me giggle.  Made in Madeira, this pair of grey cotton towels features a man and a woman with padded “appendages” during their morning routine.  Every stitch is hand done from the applique to the hem on 3 sides to the buttonhole stitching on the bottom scalloped edge.  They each measure 19.5” x 14.5”.  The “hers” towel has a tiny bit of raveling on the bottom scallop but they are otherwise perfect.  This type of towel is probably the most sought after towel that Madeira ever made.  Sold as a set.

Hand washed, air dried and pressed.   c. 1940’s
